Children's Special Events
Pride Parade
FUMC is a Reconciling congregation: we welcome and affirm the full participation of all people! Our participation in Madison's annual Pride Parade is one way we advocate on behalf of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families. Children of the congregation often join our parade unit and participate by riding in strollers,
riding bicycles and tricycles, or walking the parade route and distributing candy or balloons to parade attendees. (There are always candy and balloons for the kids to enjoy themselves too!)
Sunday School Kick-Off
On the Sunday after Labor Day children and families are invited to the Sunday School Kick-Off. We celebrate the beginning of the new church school year with an Open House, fun activities and special foods. Sunday school spaces for children, youth and adults are all open with teachers and building hosts ready to help you explore all the wonderful ways and places to be involved!
Bibles for 3rd Graders
In September as children are beginning a new school year, each 3rd grader receives the gift of a Bible from the congregation. This special gift is given hoping that it will be used by children in Sunday School and other settings and that it will become an important companion throughout the rest of their lives.
Bible Learning Breakfast
After children entering third grade have received their new Bibles, the join 4th and 5th graders for a morning of fun Bible learning games. The games help children get acquainted with their Bibles while they snack on a breakfast of interesting and tasty Bible foods, which they have identified through their Bible searches!
Acolytes
Serving as an acolyte and bringing the Light of Christ into 9:30 worship celebrations is something children grade 3 and older enjoy.
Annual UNICEF Carnival
Throughout the month of October children save coins in special UNICEF collection boxes and then bring them to the carnival on the last Sunday of October. During the Sunday school hour on that last Sunday of the month, children have fun playing games while learning about the lives of children and families all over the world. And the best part is that the coins they've collected (along with other gifts from adults) go to help
children and families all over the world!
Hanging of the Greens
On the Saturday before Advent families come together to decorate the church Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall and Chapel for the Advent and Christmas seasons. Decorating is followed by a lunch of homemade soup and Christmas cookies!
Heifer Project Gift Ark
Special financial offerings collected in children's Heifer Project International ark banks throughout the Advent season help our congregation fill a Heifer Gift Ark to aid families all across the world.
Christmas Pageant
Old Befana
On the first Sunday of the New Year, Madison artist Ken Lonnquist and friends present the musical story of Old Befana. It's a fun and heart-warming Epiphany story about a journey of kings and a woman who joins the journey in search of the special child. This is an annual favorite of children and families and is not to be missed!
Bring-a-Bear-Show-You-Care
On the Sunday following Valentine's Day, children contribute stuffed animal toys to our annual Bring-a-Bear-Show-You-Care Collection which provides Madison police officers with warm, cuddly toys they can share with children they encounter in traumatic situations.

The theme in 2013 is Everywhere Fun Fair and children will be learning about neighbors all across God's world. VBS is a family affair beginning with a simple supper. After supper kids and leaders walk over to James Madison Park for stories, music, games and crafts. Parents will come to the park for a time of visiting together.
